University of Alabama quarterback Joe Namath signs a $400,000 contract with the New York Jets of the American Football League. The richest rookie in history will receive a guaranteed $100,000 for three years; $100,000 in bonuses, and a yearly pension of $5,000 after his retirement from the game.

Boston Red Sox pitcher George Herman "Babe" Ruth is sold to the New York Yankees for $125,000, the most money ever paid for a ballplayer. Ruth hit a record 29 home runs during the 1919 season and had asked that his salary be doubled from $10,000 to $20,000.

James Blackstone is bowling a perfect game until the last frame, when the seemingly impossible happens. All of the pins go down except one, and that one breaks in two - leaving one half still standing. He winds up with a score of 299 1/2.
