Sir Henry Morton Stanley- Explorer, journalist; as a New York
Herald correspondent, he led the expedition to find Dr. David
Livingstone, the missionary from whom no word had been received
for over two years. After months of treacherous travel, he discovered
Livingstone on the shore of Africa's Lake Tanganyika and inquired
simply, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Born in Denbigh, England.

Mario Lanza- Opera singer, actor; a magnificient tenor, his
starring role in the motion picture The Great Caruso did much
to popularize opera. He also appeared in two popular movie musicals

Thomas Merton- Poet, priest; a convert to Catholicism who became
a Trappist monk before being ordained, he is best know for his
autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain. He wrote numerous
volumes of poetry, the most famous of which is Figures for an
Apocalypse. Born in Prades, France.

Jackie Robinson- Baseball player; he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers
in 1947 as the first black player in the major leagues and was
a major factor in his team's winning six pennants and a World
Series. He was his league's Most Valuable Player in 1949 and
Hall of Famer, 1962. Born in Cairo, Georgia.

and the Dead, was made into a highly successful motion picture.
